ACBA Summer Update!

The Young Lawyers Division has kept busy this summer by giving back to Atlantic County while enjoying the beautiful weather. Our members were honored to be able to participated in two exciting events with amazing local organizations.

YLD Paddles in Second Annual Gilda's Club Dragon Boat Race

On Saturday, July 15, 2017, YLD members rowed in the Atlantic County Bar Association's boat at the Second Annual Gilda's Club Dragon Boat Race. Located for the first time at the beautiful Lake Lenape, racers enjoyed a fun-filled day of paddling, tug-o-war, zorbing (human hamster ball), delicious barbecue, and a tricky tray auction. The ACBA boat ended up with a pair of successful heats and a newfound appreciation for the energy and training that goes into being a part of a successful Dragon Boat team.

In addition to being a part of this fantastic event, the YLD made a $1,000 donation to Gilda's Club. Gilda's Club South Jersey (GCSJ) is the only cancer support community in southern New Jersey offering a free, comprehensive program of psychosocial support including educational lectures, workshops, social activities, and support groups to men, women, teens and children impacted by cancer. Team Awards can be found here, and results from all of the day's races can be found here.

ACBA YLD Sponsors Franklin Institute Traveling Science Show for Boys and Girls Club

On August 24, 2017, the YLD sponsored a presentation of the Franklin Institute Traveling Science Show at the Boys and Girls Club in Atlantic City. The crowd was comprised of 150 children ages 6-18 years old.

The idea for a community outreach event with the Boys and Girls Club was born after Inna Pokrovnichka, YLD Parliamentarian, attended a presentation about the Boys and Girls Club hosted by former YLD Chair and current ACBA Trustee, Julie Nugent. YLD members reached out to and eventually met with Maryann McElroy, Maryann McElroy, Director of Development for the Boys and Girls Club to see how they could best utilize the YLD's resources to assist the Club.

The idea that was settled on was sponsorship of the Franklin Institute Traveling Science Weather Show. Our Director of Community Outreach, Jennifer Rodriguez, worked with the Franklin Institute to organize and plan the show. Information about booking with the Franklin Institute is available here. The Weather Show includes both independent activities and interactive demonstrations by Franklin Institute staff.

The YLD looks forward to continuing to work with and assist the Boys and Girls Club both in their own efforts and by sponsoring future outreach events.

“I can’t tell you how much the kids enjoyed the show. I never saw them so well behaved and engaged in an activity. I think you made a lot of kids very happy. And…maybe they even learned something in the process!” - Maryann McElroy, Director of Development, Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City
